“Drawing has always been an escape for me, somewhere to turn when I need Introvert Time, while still allowing me to feel connected to people in a weird way,” Campbell says.

Campbell became fascinated with caricatures after reading Mad Magazine as a fifth grader. Inspired by Mort Drucker’s extraordinary talent, he picked up a pen to explore his artistry.

As the years passed and Campbell refined his style, he began going to conventions to present his caricatures to the very subjects of his work. Film stars like Carrie Fisher (Star Wars), Doug Bradley (Hellraiser) and Lisa and Louise Burns (The Shining) applauded Campbell’s aptitude.

“My caricatures connect me to the subjects, so they're all personal to me in some way. If the subject is a movie character I like, I get to express all of that in the drawing, and then when I look at the finished work, it reminds me of everything I like about that character/movie,” Campbell says. “If the subject is a real-life person, then I remember meeting the person, the conversations, etc. That makes me feel connected, which is a neat way to do that as an introvert.”

Campbell created his Instagram page as a way to fuel his creativity and battle his depression last year. Since then, he has committed to posting a new caricature every day. He says drawing is a good place to turn when his depression hits, as it allows him to see his talent in front of him. This, he says, gives him “that ray of hope that shines through the dark clouds.”

“Having my art was one of the few things that got me through the year,” he says. “It gave me a daily goal, it gave me something to focus on which wasn't the election or the imminent demise of humanity, and it gave me that connection to things I love. That last one was especially important, as there was just so much negativity floating around all year.”

Like all of us, Campbell has no idea what 2021 holds. However, he’s hoping to spread joy through his art in person, especially since Instagram’s ever-changing algorithm makes it even more challenging for artists to get their work seen.

“If things start opening back up, my goal is to get out into the convention scene to meet people and peddle my wares to like-minded souls. I also happen to think that my artwork is perfect for conventions, as you can grab an 8x10 and get your favorite actor to sign it!” Campbell says. “It's also cool to see people's reactions when they look at my work, and that is more valuable than a simple ‘like,’ which is not to say I don't appreciate each and every ‘like’ I get!”

Campbell would also like to see his shop gain traction next year. (In an interview from earlier this year, he said he was planning on selling his art “in the near future.” Which he has obviously now made happen.)

Considering his proven determination to accomplish his goals, it would come as no surprise if he gets swamped in requests.

Campbell has illustrated what it means to be passionate, proficient and persistent.

“My artwork really does come from the heart. I believe that caricature shows its subject in a unique way that people aren't going to get from anywhere else, including caricatures by different artists, because everyone's eye and style are unique),” Campbell says. “Some art is spooky, some is cool, some is mind-bending; I think that mine is fun. Not only that, but it's a guaranteed conversation piece when you hang it on your wall!”

To celebrate the holiday season, Campbell is having a special sale on all shop items! Use “YULE2020” to get 30% off each item.
